NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover - Countdown to Mars

Follow the road to launch for our next mission to the Red Planet, the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. NASA leadership and a panel of scientists and engineers will preview the upcoming mission at 2 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, June 17.

Briefing participants will be:
- NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine
- Lori Glaze, director of NASA's Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington
- Katie Stack Morgan, Perseverance deputy project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California
- Matt Wallace, Perseverance deputy project manager at JPL
- Luis Dominguez, Perseverance deputy electrical integration and test lead at JPL
- Omar Baez, launch director in NASA's Launch Services Program at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida

Submit your questions during the briefing using #AskNASA!

Perseverance is a robotic scientist that will search for signs of past microbial life on Mars and characterize the planet's climate and geology. It will also collect rock and soil samples for future return to Earth and pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet. The mission is scheduled to launch from Space Launch Complex 41 at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 9:15 a.m. EDT July 20. It will land at Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021.

The modern climate of space exploration for the last couple decades is taking the path of least resistant that could push a mars manned mission hundreds of years into the future or until it is not that challenging of a task and our last manned to the moon was decades ago with primitives' technology.

Ion engines have a very high specific impulse and efficiency but very low TWR so you would need a large rocket with liquid fuel or solid fuel to get it up there but even then ion propulsion isn’t completely developed and there are very few actual engines produced in the last 10 years

I think NASA should initiate a new rover called Anomaly, with the key mission of investigating some of the most intriguing anomalies on Google Mars that people have found. For example, life forms such as here 47°36'40.95"S 4°23'7.37"E Range 85m Heading 107°, right-angled walls and geometric buildings in highly developed colonies, with white roofs, such as here 34°21'44.23"N 64°41'7.55"E, and rivers, such as here 6°55'22.99"N 170°50'53.94"E (500 Kilometres long....), as well as the many lights at the entrances of tunnels, such as here 35°50'47.73"N 62°26'11.53"E. Is there any chance of that happening? There should at least be a team of people or at least one expert devoted to investigating AND commenting on such anomalies. Is there any chance of that happening? I'm talking about someone who will comment sensibly, not just devote time to dismissing everything found by someone other than NASA... After all, team Curious Public is huge, we pay you with our taxes, and we are not all suffering from pareidolia... BTW, great find, Jezero Crater. It's about the most featureless crater on the planet Mars. Why go there when you could have gone just over 300km further to the fascinating Dark Spot of Mars, which is full of interesting features to investigate...

If we can get to mars and elon musk can put a car into space why cant we bring what ever samples we want back to earth they say they will bring another vehicle to mars after they have landed the new rover then deliver samples to another vehicle back to earth why cant we bring back bigger rocks or samples not just sand also with bringing these things back are we not contaminating the earth or mars. we have cars that can drive them selfs on earth now why cant we use some of this tec and why cannot you send a camera on the rover and then when it is moving over mars the public could look at it not just nasa so we could see mars live as the rover moves around the planet . this would be great for every one to study mars and look round for signs of life .but nasa says there is no life so why dont they prove it by putting the camera live then all of us can look . im sure they could do this if they wanted to as they control a rover from earth and move it around . mars people would pay to see live pictures of mars let us have a look .

    • Simon Y

      Simon Y

      Πριν 4 μήνες

We can't bring back samples yet because that would involve a rocket launch from Mars to get back to Earth. And you can't send live video or control the rover in real time from Earth because there's a delay - it takes radio waves up to 22 minutes to go from Earth to Mars, because they travel at the speed of light and Earth and Mars are up to 22 light minutes apart. And the bandwidth is very low, so real-time video isn't really straightforward to do, and it doesn't really have any scientific benefit so the cost of adding another camera and the steaming equipment isn't worth it.

tldw, but I've got the gist. Another Mars rover. Woo. I know that space exploration is challenging, and that it is made impossible by the widespread political hostility to space exploration, coming from a broad basis of teeming millions of ignorant warmongering people, who do nothing but pollute the Earth to the inevitable doom of civilization, and of thousands of other species besides; but that's no reason to applaud every single effort made in space exploration, no matter how entirely vain, misguided, and pointless. It's another rover. It rolls around on the ground- Whizzo! It comes down on a sky crane which deliberately crashes itself- Pow! It's got a laser turret- Pew-pew-pew! Just like the last rover. The last rover - 'Curiosity' - was incapable of detecting life itself, but the press release at the time said that it could find promising sites for the next better-equipped rover to look for life (no one asked why not simply equip the first rover to detect life as well as finding promising sites to look for life, you know, whilst it was at a promising site for finding life on Mars with nothing better to do). So how is 'Perseverance' better equipped than 'Curiosity'? Well, in addition to Curiosity's exciting innovations, 'Perseverance' has got a helicopter too- Chocka-chocka-chocka! And microphones to listen to Martian wind that's inaudible in real life- Whoosh! And it will leave a trail of Martian soil samples _on Mars_ for a later mission to pick up and send to Earth; a later mission that obviously isn't even on the drawing board. And it has tiny little bits of spacesuit to test the Martian conditions on, and an experiment to obtain tiny amounts of breathable oxygen from the Martian atmosphere for astronauts to breathe, that is very tiny little astronauts the size of ants; as if the want of such experiments is all that is holding up the manned exploration of Mars that obviously isn't even on the drawing board; you know, the manned exploration of Mars that could happen within five years if everyone really wanted it to, and would have already happened decades ago by now if it was ever going to happen. Besides which, all of that could have been done on Earth anyway. So what's the point in doing it on Mars? The only reason to send a robot to Mars is to look for signs of life. If you're only sending a robot to Mars to humiliate the communists with useless space gimmicks, you only end up humiliating yourself. What about actual experiments to look for life? A simple light microscope that looks at soil samples that have had tepid water added, to see if anything starts swimming around in them? A thorough investigation of the origins of Mars' sub-surface methane including isotopic analysis? A landing site near the apparent subsurface brine flows? The sub-polar ice lakes? WHAT ABOUT THE SEARCH FOR LIFE? It's another rover. An expensive toy that achieves nothing. And NASA just appears to be a dumping ground for people for whom it is inconceivable that their [white] privilege might not actually pass for an elite education in the wider cosmos. The rover should not have been called: 'Perseverance', it should have been called: 'Vanity'. And it should have been equipped with a very loud horn that plays: 'La Cucaracha' in the thin Martian atmosphere.

Why don't you go and write a more productive essay on something that might boost your intellect, instead of lowering it

In these times, I'd much rather be closer to God... "O Son of Man! Wert thou to speed through the immensity of space and traverse the expanse of heaven, yet thou wouldst find no rest save in submission to Our command and humbleness before Our Face." ~ Baha'u'llah, The Hidden Words, Baha'i Faith

This is a big progress for the human race. The future is now and we have the chance to make it amazing as we wake up and get involved. All hands on deck. As an evolving specie, communication is key and togetherness will take us far by the grace of God.

How about a shovel so it can dig on the Perseverance Rover? I think flipping over the top layer would find the most stuff. If you wanted to find stuff on the beach would you just look on top, or dig down?

IHi guys I think that its a good project but its been too long a time in coming as a kid I watched Neil Armstrong land on the moon you hyped me up about space flight and then let me down nothing for 51 years go NASA go we need to be on Mars and on the Moon and all the Moons of our Solar system this is way over due. The shuttle was cool ut the space station? What hapoened to the rotating gravity wheel? Ok now I understand that its not all as simple as that and today space seems lije its finalky beginninf to wake up at last so many missions now thats good NASA get us up there I know you can do it for Humankind and afford us Humans with a better chance of survival for our species y getting us on the Moon and Mars and beyond these are intresting times I only wish thst I was younger to be able to see Star Trek happen for real Humans colonising planets around other stars incredible Well done NASA and well done SpaceX.

This Is Mars Veteran. I went to mars 1994-1996 and 1997-1999 2004-2007 2010-2012 I am happy to reveal our secret space efforts and Canada is happy to announce that we were the first to touch the surface of another planet. yes you are reading this first. take to heart that a great nation like Canada gets the credit for furthering the exploration of space and is the Country to hold the claim to the credit. Gerrett Leslie Salter is the first person to touch another planet. 1994

This mission is total Bullcrap because you people of NASA allready know that life is present at Mars. Annyone who is willing to put in some effort and download the raw images from earlier missions (especially Spirits) and watch these in 3D or cross-eyed 3D will see that all these images have this extra layer that covers the complete surface your seeing in these images. Watch it on a big oled panel in cross-eyed 3D and you will be able to see past this layer and see objects on the surface. If you can't see it increasing the height with atleast a factor 3, this will help a lot.
